Former Virginia Tech running back David Wilson wasn’t as fast in the 40-yard dash as expected, but he still had a strong day of testing Sunday at the NFL Scouting Combine at Lucas Oil Field in Indianapolis.

And former Hokies wide receivers Danny Coale and Jarrett Boykin had mixed results in their combine events.

Wilson ran the 40 in 4.49 seconds, well under the 4.29 he ran at Tech, but it was still good enough for a tie for seventh among the running backs tested at the combine. He was strong in the other events, including pass catching drills.

Wilson had the best vertical leap (41 inches) and the best broad jump (132 inches) of all the running backs tested. He had the best vertical by three inches over Mississippi’s Brandon Bolden, and he had the best broad jump by nine inches over Temple’s Bernard Pierce.

Wilson was tied for third among all running backs in the 20-yard shuttle (4.12 seconds), fourth in the 60-yard shuttle (11.59) and 10th in the 3-cone drill (7.09 seconds). He will wait until Tech’s pro day March 15 to do bench press testing.

The running backs were graded for their overall performance, and David Wilson finished second with an 86.5. He was behind only Miami’s Lamar Miller, who had an 87.0.

Not sure what goes into the overall grade, but NFL.com says a player graded between 85-95 is a projected first rounder and an “immediate starter” in the NFL.

Coale and Boykin both fared better in some events than others. Here is how they each did in the seven events.

40-yard dash:                                    4.50 seconds (tied-15th)

Bench press (225 pounds):          12 reps (tied-30th)

Vertical leap:                                     35 inches (tied-24th)

Broad jump:                                      115 inches (tied-29th)

3-cone drill:                                       6.69 seconds (2nd)

20-yard shuttle:                                4.15 seconds (tied-12th)

60-yard shuttle:                                11.22 (tied-4th

40-yard dash:                                    4.74 (40th)

Bench press (225 pounds):          11 reps (tied-33)

Vertical leap:                                     36 inches (tied-18th)

Broad jump:                                      123 inches (tied-10th)

3-cone drill:                                       7.12 (24th)

20-yard shuttle:                                4.28 seconds (23rd)

60-yard shuttle:                                11.22 (tied-4th)

Boykin (67.7) and Coale (58.2) both received grades that put them in the 4th-7th round range, according to NFL.com.

Former Tech cornerback Jayron Hosley will test with the rest of the defensive backs Tuesday.
