BLACKSBURG - Hargrave Military Academy forward Montrezl Harrell, who had signed a letter of intent to play for Virginia Tech next season, has requested to be released by the school, associate athletic director Tom Gabbard said Thursday.
Tech fired coach Seth Greenberg on April 24, then hired former assistant James Johnson a week later. Johnson, who had left the Hokies this offseason for a job at Clemson, was heavily involved in recruiting both Harrell and Rustburg’s Marshall Wood.
Wood requested his release after Greenberg’s firing but has since re-committed to Johnson.
Johnson could not immediately be reached for comment.
The 6-foot-7, 225-pound Harrell is rated as a four-star prospect by the recruiting website Rivals.com.
Also Thursday, Gabbard said no schools had contacted Virginia Tech yet for permission to speak to freshman forward Dorian Finney-Smith, who has informed Tech he plans to transfer.
