It seems Virginia Tech has found a place for Trey Edmunds … at least for now.

Hokies coach Frank Beamer thinks the 6-foot-2, 200-pound Edmunds, a freshman, could play on offense and defense before his career is through. But for fall practice, the former Parade All-American at Dan River High will play running back.

“Right now, that’s where the real need is. That’s where a guy could come in and play right now, and play a lot right now, and I think he has that kind of ability,” Beamer said.

Beamer envisions a day, however, when Edmunds could help the Hokies on both sides of the ball. He just won’t be doing it this season. The coach wants Edmunds to focus on one position only.

“I think he needs to get settled. To play as a freshman, you have to put all your attention toward that, but down the road I think that might be a possibility,” Beamer said.
